Your ”legendary“ holiday resort: Lake Mondsee in Austria
The charming township of Mondsee (literally translated: Moon Lake) is the largest municipality at Lake Mondsee with its 3.200 inhabitants. The name “Mondsee“ can refer to: Mondsee , the lake in Austria or Mondsee , the town near that lake.
Lake Mondsee stretches along the Drachenwand (Dragon’s Wall), which received its name from a huge hole in its rock face. The legend has it, that a dragon carrying a kidnapped parish housekeeper went right through it resulting in the name. Another legend says that a former Duke of Bavaria, Odilio got lost on the mountain one night and was saved only by the moon being mirrored in the lake and prevented from falling to death. Thereafter Duke Odilio founded the Benedictine monastery in Mondsee in 784. Within the monastery many impressive pieces of art were created since then! One of which is the Mondsee Matthew, the oldest German bible translation or the Tassilo Psalter, the oldest book ever written in Austria, which has been fully conserved to this day.
